Proactive Governance: Alimosho LG Inaugurates Project Iron Shield Task Force To Combat Illegal Waste Dumping, Regulate Scavenging Activities and Strengthen Community Safety

Determined to Restore Environmental Sanity, Public Safety, and Regulatory Compliance Across Alimosho

In a decisive move aimed at preserving environmental integrity, strengthening public safety, and restoring order within communities, the Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has inaugurated a Special Enforcement and Regulatory Task Force under the code name “Project Iron Shield.”

The Task Force has been mandated to combat the growing menace of indiscriminate dumping of refuse, illegal scavenging activities, unauthorized cart-pushing operations, unregulated scrap dealing, unlawful metal recycling activities, and other allied practices that constitute environmental nuisance, security threats, and public health concerns within the Local Government Area.

The initiative derives its authority from the relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Laws, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Law, and other extant regulations empowering Local Governments to safeguard public health, maintain environmental standards, and regulate activities within their jurisdictions.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Chairman of the Committee and Head of the Legal Unit, Mr. Taiwo Onayinka, described Project Iron Shield as a strategic intervention designed to dismantle the culture of environmental recklessness and criminal anonymity that has increasingly accompanied the activities of certain scavengers, scrap dealers, cart pushers, and allied operators.

According to him:

«”A clean environment is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Public safety is not a privilege; it is a right. Where refuse is indiscriminately dumped, disease takes root. Where criminality hides behind unregulated commercial activities, insecurity flourishes. This administration is determined to confront both.”»

He further noted that intelligence reports and community complaints have revealed disturbing patterns involving the theft of public infrastructure, manhole covers, electrical installations, iron gates, building materials, and other valuable assets, often finding their way into illegal scrap markets and recycling channels.

«”The days when individuals could operate under the cloak of anonymity are coming to an end. Project Iron Shield is founded on a simple principle: accountability. Every legitimate operator must be known, registered, identified, and regulated. Where the law ends, anarchy begins; and this administration will not permit anarchy to take root in Alimosho.”»

The Task Force will immediately commence the enumeration, registration, monitoring, and regulation of cart pushers, scavengers, scrap dealers, metal recyclers, and allied operators throughout the Local Government. Compliance measures will include mandatory registration, identification protocols, operational guidelines, environmental compliance requirements, and regular inspections.

The Committee has also been empowered to investigate environmental infractions, remove illegal refuse dumps, enforce sanitation regulations, and collaborate with relevant security agencies in the apprehension and prosecution of offenders.

Residents have been urged to support the initiative by reporting suspicious activities and refraining from indiscriminate waste disposal.

The Local Government reiterates that violators of environmental laws and regulatory directives shall face appropriate sanctions, including fines, seizure of equipment, closure of offending premises, and prosecution in accordance with applicable laws.

As the ancient wisdom reminds us, “A stitch in time saves nine.” Likewise, a community that protects its environment today secures its future tomorrow.

Under the leadership of Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, Alimosho Local Government remains resolute in its commitment to building cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods, healthier communities, and a more orderly society where law, order, and civic responsibility reign supreme.
