The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, on Thursday led a comprehensive environmental inspection and enforcement exercise across Iyana Ipaja and Olugbede Market, Egbeda, as part of efforts to prevent flooding during the rainy season and promote a cleaner environment.
The early morning exercise, held on July 9, 2026, focused on ensuring that gutters and drainage channels remained free of obstructions to facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater and reduce the risk of flooding.
During the inspection, blocked drains and gutters were identified and cleared as part of the council’s proactive flood prevention strategy.
Addressing traders and residents, Hon. Akinpelu warned against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into gutters and drainage channels, stressing that such practices contribute significantly to flooding and pose serious public health hazards.
At Jolaosho Street, Iyana Ipaja, several property owners were issued warning notices for environmental violations, while shops found to have contravened the Lagos State environmental sanitation laws were sealed.
The enforcement team also demolished illegal structures and shops erected on drainage channels within Olugbede Market. The chairman described the construction of shops on drainage alignments as unlawful and warned that anyone found violating environmental regulations would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He further directed traders in both markets to desist from displaying goods on walkways, road setbacks and drainage channels, emphasizing that public spaces must remain free from encroachment to ensure public safety, ease of movement and environmental order.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a cleaner, safer and flood-free Alimosho, Hon. Akinpelu urged residents and traders to support the council’s environmental sustainability drive by embracing responsible waste disposal practices and complying fully with environmental laws.
The inspection was attended by the Vice Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Adebisi Francis; the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Rasheed Semiu; the Chief of Staff, Hon. Abayomi Tonteh; Environmental Health Officers, and other senior officials of the council.
