Alimosho Local Government has joined the rest of Lagos State in commemorating the 2026 Annual Tree Planting Day, with a call on residents to embrace environmental responsibility by planting and nurturing trees for a greener and more climate-resilient future.
The exercise which was held at Coker Estate, Orisumbare, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, formed part of the annual statewide tree planting exercise observed simultaneously across the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State every July 14.
The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, was represented by the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Hon. Ismail Ajimotokan, who delivered the address of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Speaking on the theme, “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” the Governor described the annual exercise as more than a ceremonial event, saying it represents Lagos State’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.
He noted that as Lagos continues to expand as a megacity, restoring green spaces has become imperative to tackling rising temperatures, flooding and other effects of climate change.
The Governor disclosed that the State had already planted 13,401 trees, representing 67 per cent of its target of 20,000 trees as of June 30, 2026, adding that the current planting season, which runs through October, is expected to surpass the target.
Sanwo-Olu also charged the 57 LGs and LCDAs to serve as “Tree Custodians” by ensuring that every tree planted is properly nurtured and protected, stressing that “planting a tree is only the beginning; nurturing it to maturity is what truly counts.”
Also speaking, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, represented by Mr. Jimoh Omoniyi, described tree planting as one of the most effective and practical responses to climate change, environmental degradation, flooding, erosion and biodiversity loss.
According to him, environmental sustainability cannot be achieved by government alone but requires the active participation of individuals, families, schools, businesses, community groups and other stakeholders.
He urged residents to see every tree planted as an investment in cleaner air, healthier ecosystems and a sustainable future, adding that all LGs and LCDAs would continue to monitor and nurture the trees planted within their jurisdictions.

Semiu Rasheed Olamilekan; councillors, supervisors, traditional rulers, including the Elegbeda of Egbeda,
