The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has called on all stakeholders in Alimosho to unite and give urgent attention to the growing menace of drug abuse among teenagers and youths within the local government area. The Chairman made the call during a peace and security meeting held earlier today in his office while addressing the Seriki Hausawa of Alimosho, Malam Ibrahim Salisu, and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the meeting, Hon. Akinpelu Johnson stressed the need for stronger collaboration with Hausa community leaders in addressing the issue of undocumented foreigners claiming to be Hausa residents within the council area.“Malam, we will really need to work with you and other Serikis in Alimosho on how to solve the issue of non-Nigerians without proper documentation. This is not ideal, as it poses a serious security threat to our communities within the local government area. You have to lead us in finding ways to address this situation,” the Chairman said.

He also expressed deep concern over the growing trend of drug peddling, noting that some individuals now hide under the guise of legitimate businesses to sell illicit substances.“Another disturbing trend is the issue of drug peddling by some unscrupulous elements who sell hard drugs under the cover of businesses such as shoe shining, drink sales, and other petty trades,” he added.

In his response, Seriki Hausawa, Malam Ibrahim Salisu, acknowledged the concerns raised by the Chairman and assured the gathering of the Hausa community’s commitment to addressing the issue. He disclosed that he and other Hausa stakeholders had recently met with the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police in Alimosho to discuss several security concerns. According to him, one of the measures already adopted is warning members of their community against riding motorcycles (Okada) after 9:30 p.m. as part of efforts to curb crime.

Also speaking at the meeting, Oba Nosiru Babatunde Ogunronbi, the Onishasha of Shasha Kingdom, recommended the convening of a joint meeting involving the local government leadership, traditional rulers, and Hausa stakeholders to develop concrete strategies to combat the menace. The monarch further suggested that identified blackspots should be sanitised and petitions forwarded to relevant authorities for decisive action.

Corroborating the monarch’s position, Hon. Akinpelu expressed frustration over the persistence of drug-related activities.“I wish there was a law that would allow us to pull down every building housing drug peddlers or locations where hard drugs are traded,” the Chairman remarked.

The Divisional Police Officer of Afonka Police Station, Shasha, CSP O.A. Ojajumi, also highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking.“The menace of drug abuse is a big and troubling issue that we must all put hands on deck to solve. We once arrested a drug peddler, but surprisingly, we received several calls from influential people asking that he be released. That is the kind of challenge we face,” the DPO disclosed.

Other issues discussed at the meeting included the fight against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and the need for residents to cooperate with Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators to maintain a cleaner environment. The Chairman further announced that the local government will soon inaugurate Environmental Marshals to strengthen sanitation enforcement across the council area.“A cleaner environment is very important, and it must be achieved,” he said.

The Chairman also urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to intensify advocacy and sensitisation efforts, particularly among parents, on what he described as a new and disturbing trend — the emergence of cultism among primary school pupils. The meeting concluded with action-oriented discussions and practical solutions, with stakeholders pledging stronger cooperation to address security, environmental, and social challenges facing Alimosho Local Government.
