The Alimosho Local Government, led by Executive Chairman Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, joined the global community on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an impactful sensitisation programme at the council secretariat, in a strong show of commitment to women’s health.
The event, themed “Early Detection Saves Lives,” drew a large turnout of women and residents across the local government area. It focused on encouraging preventive healthcare practices and promoting early detection as a key strategy in reducing breast cancer fatalities.
Delivering his address, Hon. Akinpelu urged residents to prioritize regular health check-ups, stressing that early diagnosis remains the most effective way to combat the disease.
“Too many lives are lost each year because cancer is discovered too late,” he said. “With early detection through regular screenings, we can save lives, preserve families, and bring hope to those affected.”
The council chairman reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving healthcare delivery in Alimosho through enhanced investment in primary health facilities and continuous public health education.
He also called on men to play a supportive role by encouraging their spouses to undergo medical screening.
“Breast cancer is not a death sentence when detected early,” Akinpelu emphasized.
During the interactive session, Mrs. Akingbehin Adeyinka, one of the facilitators, conducted a practical demonstration on self-breast examination techniques, teaching participants how to identify unusual changes such as lumps, swelling, or nipple discharge.
She further cautioned women about cervical cancer, describing it as another major health threat that can be prevented through timely vaccination.
“The vaccine is available for girls from the age of nine and should be administered before any sexual experience,” she advised.
