The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving primary healthcare delivery with the official flag-off of the 2026 Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Plus Nutrition Week (MNCAH+N), urging residents to take advantage of the free healthcare services available across the council area.
The event, held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Primary Healthcare Centre, marked the commencement of the week-long health intervention designed to improve maternal and child health outcomes and reduce preventable deaths among women and children.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Akinpelu described the programme as another demonstration of his administration’s unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of every family in Alimosho, stressing that accessible healthcare remains the foundation of sustainable community development.
“A healthy mother gives birth to a healthy child, a healthy child grows into a productive adult, and a healthy community becomes a prosperous society,” the chairman said.
He noted that the initiative, organised by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with Alimosho Local Government and health partners, reinforces the belief that healthcare is not a privilege but a fundamental necessity.
The chairman disclosed that throughout the health week, free healthcare services would be provided at all Primary Health Care Centres in Alimosho Local Government and the designated service delivery points spread across the council’s seven political wards.
He urged pregnant women, nursing mothers, parents, caregivers and adolescents to take advantage of the programme, which offers antenatal and postnatal care, family planning services, deworming, malnutrition screening, Vitamin A supplementation, growth monitoring, routine health education and other essential preventive healthcare services.
According to him, the interventions are aimed at reducing maternal and child mortality while ensuring healthier families and communities.
Hon. Akinpelu assured residents that all the services would be provided free of charge, emphasizing that no one should be denied access to quality healthcare because of financial constraints.
He also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community development associations, market leaders, youth organisations, women groups and other stakeholders to mobilise residents to visit the nearest Primary Health Care Centre or designated outreach post during the exercise.
“As an administration, we remain committed to strengthening our Primary Health Care system because we understand that accessible healthcare is the foundation of sustainable development,” he said, while appreciating the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Lagos State Health District I, healthcare workers, volunteers, development partners and other stakeholders for supporting the initiative.
Declaring the exercise open, the chairman reiterated his administration’s resolve to continue supporting programmes that improve the health of mothers, newborns, children, adolescents and all residents of Alimosho Local Government.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District I, Dr. Sola Pitan, disclosed that the Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Week is being held simultaneously across all the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas in Lagos State.
He recalled that the statewide exercise was officially flagged off on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Oshodi-Isolo Local Government by the wife of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, who represented the First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
Describing the collaboration between the state and local governments as critical to achieving improved public health outcomes, Dr. Pitan said the programme focuses on mothers, newborns, children and adolescents who require timely healthcare interventions.
“We still lose mothers and children to conditions we know how to prevent. That should trouble us. This week is one small, deliberate effort to close that gap, one household at a time,” he said.
He commended healthcare workers for their dedication, describing them as lthe “backbone” of the programme.
In her welcome address, the Medical Officer of Health, Alimosho Local Government, Dr. Abimbola Adekoya, explained that the Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Week is organised twice every year to improve maternal health and reduce child mortality.
She disclosed that the programme is being implemented across all the 20 Local Governments and 37 LCDAs in Lagos State, with residents in Alimosho able to access services at Primary Healthcare Centres.
According to her, beneficiaries will receive Vitamin A supplementation, treatment for eligible children, free antenatal services and insecticide-treated mosquito nets, among other interventions.
The event also featured a family planning education session by Mrs. Emily Adegoke Omolara, who enlightened pregnant women, nursing mothers, fathers and other participants on the benefits of family planning while responding to questions from the audience.
Also, Mr. Taye Bakare conducted a tuberculosis (TB) awareness session, urging residents to seek prompt medical attention for persistent coughs. He explained that TB is an airborne disease, with symptoms including prolonged cough, weight loss, fatigue and shortness of breath, adding that diagnosis and treatment are provided free of charge by the Lagos State Government. According to him, treatment lasts a minimum of six months, with sputum samples used for adults and stool samples for children during diagnosis.
A tour of the various service stands was later conducted by Dr. Adekoya, who led Hon. Akinpelu, Dr. Pitan and other dignitaries around exhibition points showcasing nutritional supplementation, family planning, HIV testing and prevention, immunisation and other healthcare services.
