Akinpelu Johnson Lays Foundation for Modern Legislative Complex in Alimosho
The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, on Monday laid the foundation for a new Legislative Building designed to provide improved office accommodation and facilities for councillors and legislative officers in the council area.
The project, which is expected to be completed within six months, is part of the administration’s effort to strengthen democratic institutions, improve working conditions within the local government secretariat and enhance service delivery to residents.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony held at the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat, Hon. Akinpelu described the project as a major step towards building a more efficient, responsive and accountable local government system.
He said the construction of the building is beyond the provision of physical infrastructure, noting that it was intended to deepen democratic governance and create a conducive environment for the Legislative Arm to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
“This occasion is not merely about the construction of a physical structure. It is about strengthening democratic institutions, deepening good governance and creating an enabling environment for effective legislative functions within our local government,” the Chairman said.
Hon. Akinpelu noted that councillors play a central role in law-making, oversight and representation, stressing that the Legislative Arm must be adequately supported to promote accountability, transparency and inclusive governance.
He said the new complex would address the challenge of limited office accommodation that had affected the operations of the Legislative Arm for years.
According to him, the relocation of councillors to the new facility upon completion would also free up additional office spaces for administrative personnel within the existing secretariat complex.
The Chairman said the project reflected his administration’s commitment to prudent management of public resources and the provision of sustainable infrastructure for present and future generations.
He urged the contractor and project consultants to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, quality and accountability throughout the construction process.
“The people of Alimosho deserve nothing less than excellence,” he said.
Hon. Akinpelu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, improved service delivery, security, healthcare, education, youth and women empowerment, and ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach communities across the local government.
Earlier, the Head of Administration, Mr. Lawal Rafiu, welcomed guests to the ceremony and commended the Chairman for approving the construction of a befitting building for the Legislative Arm.
Mr. Rafiu described the project as a significant investment in institutional development and a demonstration of the administration’s recognition of the importance of the Legislature to grassroots governance.
The Head of Department of Works, Engr. Oladapo Oluwaseyi, said the building would occupy 201.25 square metres and comprise three floors.
He explained that the upper floor would house the Legislative Chamber as well as offices for the Clerk of the House and the Leader of the House, while the middle floor would contain offices for councillors. The ground floor, he added, would accommodate other essential offices.
Engr. Oladapo said the contractor had been given six months to complete the project.
In their goodwill messages, the Executive Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area, Hon. Dr. Lukman Abiodun Agbaje, and his Mosan-Okunola LCDA counterpart, Hon. Princess Akindele Adunni Opeyemi, commended Hon. Johnson for prioritising institutional development and providing a dedicated facility for the Legislative Arm.
Princess Opeyemi described the project as a move that would “change the narrative” by giving councillors a more suitable environment to carry out their legislative duties.
The Onishasha of Shasha Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Nasiru Babatunde Ogunronbi, also praised the Chairman for what he described as responsiveness to the needs and aspirations of residents, praying for continued divine guidance and protection for the administration.
In his vote of thanks, the Leader of the House, Hon. Semiu Rasheed Olamilekan, expressed appreciation to the Chairman for initiating the project during his tenure.
“I am one of the happiest persons on earth that this legislative building is happening during my tenure. It is a welcome development that the Chairman is giving us the structure we deserve,” Rasheed said.
The ceremony climaxed with the formal laying of the foundation by Hon. Akinpelu, assisted by Engr. Oladapo, Mr. Rafiu and other dignitaries.
Those present included chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikotun-Igando, Agbado-Oke Odo and Ayobo-Ipaja; councillors, supervisors, special advisers, the Secretary to the Local Government, political office holders, artisans, representatives of the League of Imams and the Christian Association of Nigeria, Alimosho branch, among others.
