Alimosho LG Fumigates Markets to Boost Hygiene, Safeguard Public Health

In a determined effort to promote environmental cleanliness, prevent pest infestation and protect public health, the Alimosho Local Government has carried out a comprehensive fumigation of markets across the council area.

The exercise, which took place on Friday evening, January 23, 2026, had Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, personally supervising the Iyana-Ipaja and Bola Ahmed Tinubu Markets operation alongside officials of the councilโ€™s Environmental Department.

Markets covered during the exercise included Orisunmbare Market, Baale Market, Olugbede Market, Iyana-Ipaja Market and Bola Ahmed Tinubu Market, among others within the local government area.

Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Akinpelu said the fumigation was part of his administrationโ€™s broader commitment to ensuring a clean, safe and healthy environment for residents, traders and shoppers. He stressed that the initiative would not be a one-off intervention but a continuous programme.

โ€œThis fumigation exercise is not a one-off exercise; it is a continuous one,โ€ the Chairman said. โ€œIt has become necessary to control pests and harmful microorganisms such as insects, rodents and bacteria that can contaminate food and the market environment, thereby posing serious health risks to our people. Our goal is to guarantee safe and hygienic markets for both sellers and buyers.โ€

He further appealed to market leaders and traders to complement the governmentโ€™s efforts by maintaining proper hygiene and ensuring regular cleaning of their stalls and surroundings.

Also speaking, the Head of the Department of Environment, Mrs. Odu Elizabeth, disclosed that her department carried out extensive sensitisation and enlightenment campaigns among market leaders and traders ahead of the fumigation exercise.

โ€œWe engaged the market leadership and traders before the exercise to educate them on the importance of fumigation,โ€ she said. โ€œThey understood the necessity, which is why we encountered no resistance or difficulty in carrying out the exercise.โ€

Members of the Alimosho Local Government management team, led by the Head of Administration (HOA), Dr. Idowu Banjoko, were also present to lend support to the Chairman and ensure the smooth execution of the exercise.

Residents and traders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that underscores the councilโ€™s commitment to public health and environmental sustainability.
