The Alimosho Local Government has arrested 15 residents for allegedly dumping refuse indiscriminately on roads, drainage channels and road medians across the council area.
The arrests, carried out by environmental health officers on June 16 and 17, 2026, followed a renewed enforcement drive by the administration of the Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, against environmental infractions.
The council said the action was part of efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, prevent blocked drainage channels and promote a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
The enforcement campaign gained momentum after the chairman reportedly encountered a resident allegedly dumping refuse on a road median while returning from an emergency meeting convened by the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with local government chairmen in the state.
The chairman stopped at the scene and directed that the alleged offender be apprehended.
Among those arrested in the subsequent operation were Mr. Charles Irabor of Samuel Street; Mr. Temitayo Odunayo, who was arrested at Egbeda Market; Mrs. Omolola Fatimo, a food vendor on Samuel Street; Mr. Moruf Adeniyi, a businessman; and Mr. Adegoke Taiwo.
The suspects were allegedly caught disposing of refuse at unauthorised locations, including drainage channels, roads and medians.
They admitted wrongdoing and accepted responsibility for their actions.
They said they understood the consequences of indiscriminate refuse dumping and were prepared to face the appropriate sanctions under the applicable environmental laws and regulations.
Hon. Akinpelu reiterated that the council would not tolerate practices capable of endangering public health, obstructing drainage systems or undermining the local government’s environmental sanitation efforts.
He urged residents to use approved waste-disposal points and cooperate with environmental officers, warning that offenders would be identified and dealt with in accordance with the law.
The chairman said his administration would continue to intensify public enlightenment, routine sanitation monitoring and enforcement activities across communities in Alimosho.
The chairman also appealed to residents to see environmental sanitation as a collective responsibility, noting that proper waste disposal remains essential to flood prevention, disease control and the overall well-being of the community.
