The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has charged leaders of the Community Development Committee (CDC) and Community Development Associations (CDAs) across the council area to take a more active role in strengthening community security and promoting environmental sanitation.
The Chairman gave the charge during a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the local government to deliberate on strategies for tackling insecurity, improving public safety, and enhancing environmental cleanliness across communities in Alimosho.
Speaking at the meeting, Hon. Akinpelu emphasized that security remains a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of residents, community leaders, and government agencies.
He urged CDC and CDA executives to collaborate closely with relevant departments of the local government and security agencies by providing timely information on suspicious activities and security threats within their communities.
According to the Chairman, effective community policing, strengthened neighbourhood watch structures, installation of security lights in strategic locations, regular engagement with security agencies, and prompt reporting of criminal activities are critical to maintaining peace and security in the local government area.
“Security is everybody’s business. Government alone cannot effectively tackle insecurity without the support and cooperation of residents and community stakeholders,” he said.
During the interactive session, CDC and CDA representatives identified major security concerns affecting some communities, including theft, vandalism and other criminal activities. They appealed to the council chairman to support community-based security initiatives and improve security infrastructure, particularly the provision of functional streetlights in vulnerable areas.
The meeting also focused extensively on environmental sanitation and public health.
Hon. Akinpelu reiterated that environmental cleanliness plays a vital role in preventing disease outbreaks and promoting a healthy living environment. He stressed that maintaining a clean environment should not be seen solely as a government responsibility but as a shared obligation involving all residents.
The stakeholders discussed several environmental challenges confronting communities, including indiscriminate disposal of refuse, blocked drainage channels caused by illegal dumping of waste, overgrown weeds, and the need for regular sanitation exercises.
In her remarks, the Head of the Environmental Health Department, Chief Sanitarian Mrs. Elizabeth Odu, urged residents to comply with environmental sanitation regulations and actively support government waste management initiatives.
She emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal practices and called on community leaders to intensify public sensitization campaigns on environmental hygiene.
The community representatives, in turn, appealed for additional waste bins, improved refuse collection services, and more public enlightenment programmes to address sanitation challenges across the local government.
At the end of the meeting, CDC and CDA leaders pledged to intensify community sensitization efforts on security awareness and environmental sanitation. They also promised to encourage the regular observance of monthly sanitation exercises across all wards within the local government area.
The community leaders further sought the support of the council in providing security infrastructure where necessary and institutionalising regular stakeholders’ meetings to review progress and address emerging challenges.
The meeting served as a platform for dialogue and collaboration between the local government administration and grassroots stakeholders, with participants expressing their commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at creating a safer, cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
Hon. Akinpelu assured the stakeholders of his administration’s continued support for policies and programmes that promote community development, improved security, environmental sustainability and enhanced quality of life for the people of Alimosho.
