The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has challenged council workers to significantly improve internally generated revenue (IGR), stressing that sustainable development at the grassroots must be driven by local revenue rather than dependence on statutory allocations.
The Chairman gave the charge during the Second Quarterly Workers’ Forum held at the council secretariat’s hall, on Tuesday, 16 June, 2026, where he engaged staff members on issues affecting productivity, welfare, and service delivery.
Expressing concern over the council’s revenue performance, Hon. Akinpelu reminded workers that his administration had fulfilled its promise to restore revenue collection responsibilities to council employees instead of outsourcing the task to private contractors.
According to him, the confidence reposed in the workforce must be justified through improved revenue generation to enable the council undertake more developmental projects.
“I reposed my confidence in you, but you have not been doing well,” the Chairman said.
“From the executive end, we have been very supportive. We pay festive bonuses promptly and continue to improve the work environment. Ideally, our projects should be funded through internally generated revenue, but we still have to wait for monthly allocations before embarking on most projects. That situation must change.”
Also speaking at the forum, the newly deployed Head of Administration (HOA), Mr. Lawal Rafiu, highlighted the importance of revenue generation, noting that the growing developmental expectations of residents place enormous responsibilities on the council administration.
He urged members of staff to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the July 17 registration deadline and encouraged them to pursue educational and professional advancement.
According to him, staff welfare and career progression are closely linked to productivity and self-development.
Mr. Rafiu cited the example of a former council messenger who furthered his education, rose through the ranks, and eventually retired as a Council Treasurer, urging junior staff members to acquire additional qualifications to enhance their career prospects.
The Head of Administration also warned against acts of indiscipline and disrespect within the workforce, declaring a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct while directing workers to comply with deadlines for the monthly staff verification exercise.
In her contribution, the Human Resource Officer (HRO), Mrs. Aborishade Omobolaji, warned that poor revenue generation could adversely affect staff allowances and other welfare-related commitments.
She called for transparency, accountability, proper documentation, and the immediate plugging of all revenue leakages.
Setting the tone for the council’s revenue expectations, the Council Treasurer, Mrs. Yusuf-Ogunbakin Saidat disclosed that the local government had set an ambitious internal revenue target of N185 million for the fiscal year.
She described revenue mobilization as a collective responsibility and announced plans to constitute an ad hoc revenue task force by drawing personnel from various departments and units to boost collections and achieve the target.
Speaking on behalf of workers, the Chairman of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Alimosho Chapter, Comrade Afolabi Oluwagbemiga Ezekiel commended the Chairman’s commitment to staff welfare.
He cited the maintenance of the staff bus, prompt payment of festive bonuses, and other welfare initiatives, while appealing for continued financial assistance, the provision of an additional staff bus, and an increase in palliative support for the maintenance of the existing vehicle.
One of the major highlights of the forum was the Chairman’s announcement of plans to expand the council secretariat to address the challenge of inadequate office accommodation.
Responding to requests from workers and labour leaders, Hon. Akinpelu disclosed that foundation work had already commenced on an extension building within the council premises.
According to him, the new structure, which will be attached to the existing secretariat building, will provide office accommodation for councillors and political office holders.
“When completed, the councillors and political office holders will relocate to the new structure, thereby creating additional office spaces for members of the administrative workforce,” he explained.
The interactive session also provided an opportunity for staff members to engage directly with the Chairman, raise operational concerns, and offer suggestions on strategies to improve the council’s financial standing and service delivery.
The forum concluded with a question-and-answer session involving official of the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), who addressed concerns raised by staff members regarding challenges encountered under the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme.
